Home EV Charger Installation: What You Need to Know Before You Buy

We install a lot of EV chargers in Nashville, and the most common mistake we see is homeowners buying a charger before calling an electrician. The charger selection and the panel assessment should happen in the same conversation - not sequentially.

Level 1 vs Level 2: The Real Difference

A Level 1 charger uses a standard 120V outlet. It adds about 3–5 miles of range per hour of charging. For most EVs, that means an overnight charge gets you 30–40 miles. If you drive fewer than 30 miles a day, Level 1 might actually be sufficient.

A Level 2 charger uses 240V - the same voltage as a dryer or electric range. It adds 20–30 miles of range per hour, meaning most EVs charge fully overnight. For Tesla Model 3/Y owners, a Level 2 charger can restore a full charge in 6–8 hours versus 24+ hours on Level 1.

Most homeowners with daily commutes beyond 30 miles will benefit significantly from Level 2. The installation cost is the barrier - but it’s a one-time fixed cost, not a recurring one.

Check Your Panel First

A Level 2 charger typically requires a dedicated 50A or 60A circuit. Before you buy anything, have an electrician assess your panel’s available capacity. If your panel is a 100A service and is already running near load, adding a 50A circuit for an EV charger may require a panel upgrade first.

We see this regularly: a homeowner buys a $700 charger, we assess the panel, and they discover they need a $2,200 panel upgrade before the charger can be installed. The upgrade would have happened anyway (the panel was undersized), but the sequencing is more expensive when the charger is already in the box.

Which Charger Should You Buy?

We don’t have brand affiliations, so here’s an honest breakdown:

Tesla Wall Connector- the best choice for Tesla owners. 48A output (the maximum most Teslas can accept), sleek design, good app integration.

ChargePoint Home Flex- adjustable amperage (16A–50A), works with any EV, good app, and ChargePoint’s network integration if you ever use public chargers.

Grizzl-E Classic- basic, durable, weatherproof, good value. No app, which is fine if you don’t need scheduling features.

Avoid cheap no-name chargers on Amazon. The safety certifications matter - UL-listed or Energy Star certified only.

What Does Installation Cost?

In the Nashville area, a straightforward Level 2 charger installation runs $400–$800. That range covers the dedicated circuit, breaker, and outlet or hardwire connection. Variables that increase cost: long conduit runs from the panel to the garage, panel upgrades needed, trenching for outdoor runs.

Tennessee offers no state EV charger rebate as of 2026, but federal tax credits may apply - check with your tax advisor.

Do You Need a Permit?

In Nashville Metro, adding a new 240V circuit requires an electrical permit.
